"Data acquisition is the process of capturing signals that indicate physical situations in the actual world and transforming the resulting samples to digital numeric values that a computer can manipulate. In most cases, data acquisition systems, abbreviated DAS, DAQ, or DAU, convert analogue waveforms to digital values for processing. Data acquisition systems, or DAQ devices, are critical for testing items ranging from vehicles to medical devices - in other words, any electromechanical device that humans use. Prior to data collection, items were evaluated in an ad hoc, extremely subjective manner. For instance, when engineers were evaluating a new suspension in a vehicle, they frequently relied on test drivers' perceptions of how the suspension ""felt."" These subjective judgements were replaced by objective measures with the creation and development of data capture devices capable of collecting data from a broad variety of sensors. These can readily be replicated, compared, statistically examined, and shown in a variety of ways.

This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts in the field of data acquisition. It gives the reader sufficient understanding of the topics to implement a data acquisition system. It deals with virtual instrumentation for electromechanical impedance technique, bio-physical data acquisition, data acquisition systems in bioprocesses, particle physics experiments and data acquisition in pulmonary ventilation. It also sheds light on dynamic testing of data acquisition channels, switching phenomena of reactive loads and harsh environment data acquisition. Readers will benefit from the hands-on approach, culminating with data acquisition projects. This book attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under this discipline and how such concepts have practical applications. It is ideal for personnel of firms deals with advanced instrumentation, energy consumption monitoring, environment monitoring, non-descructive diagnostics robotics, etc., as well as academic staff and postgraduate students in electrical, control and computer engineering.
